Paddleboarding the Blue Waters of Belize

paddleboard-belize-cover

When we were packing for our trip to St. George's Caye Resort a thought occurred to me: I should bring my paddleboard. It is an inflatable SUP so it wouldn't be that difficult to pack my clothes around the gear and get on the plane. My very sensible wife convinced me that the resort had boards available and that I would be able to get on the water at anytime. She also reminded that we were headed to the private, quite reserve of St. George's Caye to relax! So off we went sans board. I was cautiously optimistic that boards would be at the ready.

As we flew over the continent and we reached the east coast, the bright blue Belizean waters revealed themselves. I have see the water in Mexico, I have seen the water in Hawaii and I have seen the water in Bali but I have never seen water this colour before. It is vibrant. A real treat for my travelling eyes. As I peered out that airplane window all I could think about was, "When do I get to paddle?!". One of our hosts explained to us that there is a shelf along most of the Caribbean coast line. It is wide and an average of about 5' to 12' deep. Sounds perfect!

We were escorted from the airport to a boat waiting for us at a nearby dock. Getting to St. George's Caye Resort is a short boat shuttle from Belize City. It is only 7 miles making the trip quick. Arriving at the island we were greeted with smiling faces, a colourful refreshment and...there they were, all tucked away in a seaside rack – the paddleboards! My smile was ear to ear and my wife gave me that 'I am happy for you' and 'see, I told you there was nothing to worry about' look!

That evening it was all I could do not to jump on a board and go explore but we were being treated to the weekly Saturday evening beach bonfire and dinner. Wow, what a way to start an island vacation. We got to know some of the staff, introduced ourselves to the other guests and got acquainted with our new home for the next week. John, my business partner and fellow paddle addict, and I discussed our game plan for the next morning. We had some exploring to do.

The next morning after fresh coffee and a hearty island breakfast, we were ready. We checked out the selection of boards, sized up paddles and off we went. St. George's Caye is a small island. I think has a circumference of about 2.5kms (about a mile). There is a windward side and a leeward side. We chose to start on the leeward side. It is more sheltered and adorned with mangroves. The water is very peaceful and never very deep.

One of the first things we discovered was a manatee habitat. Who knew?! Right off the docks of the resort live a family of sea cows. We were hopeful to see one but know that sea life can be elusive. Not for us it seems! We saw a little splash from our standing view point so we went to investigate. Paddleboards are the perfect vessel for experiencing sea life. They are quite and your view point is much higher that a kayak or boat. As we got closer to the manatee we notice there were two – an infant and an adult. How cool! They saw us, swam right under the board and then swam away to mind their own business. We carried on through the mangroves back to the resort to report on our sightings.

That evening we were given a show by the Belize sky. Our first vibrant sunset was about to happen. The first thought in our minds – let's go get boards! Our we went towards the every changing array of colours as the sun sank down below the horizon. The waters calmed right down and we enjoyed the peace and serenity that the glowing hour bestowed upon us. It was at this moment we were falling in love with this little slice of paradise.

After seeing our love for being on the water, other guests and staff encouraged us to take advantage of a sailboat ride out to the sandbar. Oliver rigged up the sails and took us on the short journey just off the end of the Caye. It was spectacular. We played and snorkelled in three to five feet of warm, clear water. Our senses over flowed. As we sailed back John and I both knew we were paddling back out the next day. Everyone thought we were crazy. That is was too far. Being from Canada and paddling in the North Pacific made us feel comfortable with the distance. We decided to approach the sandbar from the leeward side of the island. We thought we would avoid any wind or major currents that way. Once off the tip of the island we realized just how close we were and it had only been about 20 minutes of paddling. We were about to head straight out to the sandbar and meet the sailboat when all of the sudden John spotted something...

A single splash off the bows of our boards turned out to be a few splashes. One, two and then three dolphins popped up and started to get curious about us. I was elated. Seeing a dolphin in the wild was definitely a bucket list activity. My wife absolutely loves dolphins and although I knew she would be overjoyed that we saw some, she would want to come explore as well.

All of the sudden two more dolphins joined us. We paddled with this pod of five amazing and curious creatures for close to an hour. They would feed, play, swim and come by us once in a while to check us out. We paddle gently and took photos until our camera ran out of batteries! John and I saw some friends anchor the sailboat and we decided we would try to paddle corral the dolphins over to them. Like we thought we were some sort or paddle dolphin ranchers! Just when we though the dolphins were going along with our plan, they took a turn and went off in the other direction. But wow, what an incredible experience. Paddleboarding with dolphins.

The buzz about paddleboarding was growing around the guests at the resort. Many guests who had never tried it before saw what we were experiencing wanted in. It was really cool to see people new to the sport give it a try and get the same feelings we were getting. That brought us a lot of joy to share this lifestyle we enjoy so much with new friends.

That evening the sunset show was back on and the ladies joined us. The colours were slightly different but just as magical. We were out there until dark and loved being on the water with our loves. It is calm, connected and creates a different sort of bond when you do things like this together. We still reflect back on our time paddling together in the warm Belize sun. Watching for rays and dolphins and just talking about life. It is moment in our lives we will always look back on and cherish. What made it even better was sharing the time with two very special friends.

On about day four of our stay at St. George's Caye Resort we gained a reputation and the crazy Canadian paddleboarders. We took on the moniker with pride and lived up to the expectations. John and I were determined to discover more sea life, paddle around the island and go back to the sandbar again. In our travels we saw countless stingrays, manta rays, manatees, barracuda, tarpon, a nurse shark and even a crocodile! Now don't freak out, the croc was quite a ways from the resort and he took of like a shot as soon as he saw us (hence no picture...you'll just have to take my word for it!). I can tell you, experiencing St. George's Caye by paddleboard was incredible and life altering. I recommend it to anyone to try. You don't have to have any paddle experience whatsoever. You can even kneel on the board to get started. Just do it and go experience your island vacation from a different perspective. You'll never know what you'll discover unless you leave the shore!

Lionfish Hunting in Belize

DIVING-Lionfish-belize

Imagine dipping into the Caribbean Sea and exploring the Barrier Reef just off the coast of Belize. You'll come across many beautiful and colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, and you may even swim alongside a manatee or dolphin. One species of fish you are sure to encounter is the Lionfish. Lionfish are beautiful (and tasty!), but are also an invasive species to the Caribbean with no known predators, and a danger to the health of the coral reef ecosystem.

Since it's impossible to eliminate the lion fish, our goal is to manage the population by spearfishing, netting, and line fishing them and enjoying the delicious white meat at mealtime.

To do our part to help control the population around Belize, our dive professionals often take spear guns out with them. Experienced divers can take advantage of this unique and fun opportunity to hunt lionfish and help the reef alongside our dive professionals! This specialty dive is offered as a local two tank dive or a one tank dive at the reef. No matter which you choose, the thrill and excitement of the hunt will be a memory you'll carry with you long after you've left the island.

With a little luck, you might bring back enough lion fish for the chef to prepare appetizers for everyone! Yes, although they have venomous fins, lion fish are a delicate and delicious white meat. There are many tasty ways to prepare lionfish, such as ceviche, lionfish fingers, whole fried lionfish, lionfish fillet and lionfish fishcakes.

"We caught 16 lionfish between three of us with Hawaiian slingshots when we were diving and shared that with the group. They grilled them up and it was one of the best things there to eat."

We hope you'll join us for this thrilling specialty dive to help protect our local reef during your next trip to the island!

St. George's Caye Resort is found 7-miles from main-land Belize City. Transfers are made by boat and once you have landed at BZE International Airport, your valet will have you on the island's sandy shores in under 30 minutes. Offering an array of adventure, romance, relaxation and SCUBA excursions, this resort is acclaimed for pristine reefs, seclusion and the ability to do as much or as little as one wishes.

Sweet Island Seclusion: Listen - The Caribbean is Calling

Caribbean-Sea---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Beliz_20200304-195016_1 Set sail on the big Caribbean blue at St. George's Caye Resort.

Known for turquoise waters and a vibrant culture, the Caribbean has long been one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. And for North American travelers, it's right next door - or at least a short flight away. Two million tourists visit every year, and more are finding their way to islands for a thatched roof over-water bungalow or cabana experience and for extra seclusion and exclusivity.

With 7000 unique islands in the Caribbean, we wanted to share some of the magic that keeps our quaint island hopping with new and returning guest, all year around.

Impeccable Service

When we reflect on what really makes us unique, of course, finding a virtually private island that is only 25 minutes by boat from the mainland is a win in and of itself! However, our people who serve our guests are likely our most redeeming quality, even above the beauty and vibe of our little slice of paradise. Reviews state often that the service received is almost as memorable as the land and sea scape.

Incredible, Secluded Location

As someone finds us as a potential destination for their next adventure, they are so pleased to find how close we are to the mainland. Many of our guests traveling from North America, can leave in the morning and be to the island in time for lunch on the same day! We will have a delicious, authentic meal ready just in time for your arrival!

Complimentary Activities

There are many guests who never leave the island. They find the perfect blend of relaxation and the complimentary, onsite activities.

 Island Time

This is a common term used to describe the laid-back vibe, perfect for those who love a quiet getaway. Or, balance that with your more adventurous spirit, venturing out to kayak, snorkel or zipline.

Whether you seek adventure or the ultimate in relaxation, we suggest booking at least six months in advance of your stay at St. George's Caye Resort. We fill fast, in all seasons.

Our guests typically book 3-12 months in advance, so if you are unsure of your future plans, it is best to reach out so that we can equip you with the information to make the best decision and plan your dream getaway!

We can't wait to see you and be of world class service to you in the sun!

Warm and sunny regards,

  • - Your St. George's Caye Resort Team

"It's a Jungle" - Belize's Wildlife Beauty

macaws-together Macaws Belize Zoo

Most of the rain forest mammals of Belize are nocturnal and secluded in their nature. This makes them extremely difficult to find. Animals of prey are alert for approaching predators, so they will likely sense you before you are able to see them. That is why the Belize Zoo is such a unique and a must-do destination.

St. George's Caye Resort offers a colorful excursion to the cultural sites of the country as well as the Belize Zoo. Because these animals are so beautiful, but also hidden wonders, the zoo allows for a chance to see these creatures in their natural environment, while maintaining safety and comfort. That is one reason that this is such a special place.

A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person. Just a few of the incredible species include:

If you are looking for a well rounded visit, this offers the chance to immerse yourself in the ecosystem, culture and island / jungle vibes of this diverse country.

How to Soak up a Week in Belize

St.GeorgesCaye-114-1

Travel authority Travel + Leisure writes that, by scientific standards, the best duration for a vacation is eight days. We figure you are saving at least one day for total and complete relaxation, so here we share some incredible ways to spend the rest of your week!

Belize is home to many historical and cultural sites, as well as beautiful beaches and reefs. If you're planning to spend a week here, we understand how it can be difficult to decide what to see and do, while also making time to relax. At the island we're all about balance, and we have come up with the perfect way to experience Belize during your week in the sun

Snorkel over our Bountiful Coral Reef System

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world, and home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem of plants and sea life. Over 500 species of fish and marine life can be found on the reef! As you explore, you'll see brightly colored fish dart in and out of gorgeous corals and sponges as sea turtles and rays pass by. You may even spot a dolphin or manatee if you're lucky!

TripAdvisor Five Star Review

"We stayed over New Year's Eve for 3 nights. It was exactly what we have expected - even more. The staff is amazing (attentive, friendly, helpful).

Sport activities are plenty. We have been snorkeling (seeing rays, fishes, turtles, corals), kayaking, sailing (with dolphins in front of the hotel - most impressive moment for me in 2019!), anchoring at a sandbank close to the hotel where we enjoyed the blue breathtaking water and view."

Guided Cave Tubing + Zip Lining in the Jungle

Float on inner tubes and glide past mists of jungle light and underground waterfalls as you drift along the river. Then float into the crystal cathedral, a spiritual center to the ancient Maya.

Afterwards, experience an adrenaline rush as you whiz past a stunning display of tropical flora and fauna as you zip line across the jungle canopy. Experience a birds-eye-view of the Belize jungle and river as you soar from tree to tree.

Schedule a Day of Rest

Take a day or two in between adventures to simply relax and enjoy all the island life has to offer. Relax in a hammock with an ocean view, grab a rum punch at our Sandbar Lounge and enjoy it poolside, fish off the dock, take an afternoon nap, kayak around the mangroves, or walk along the beach at sunset.

Explore Lamanai Ancient Maya Temple and Maya Ruins

The name "Lamanai" comes from the word "submerged crocodile" in the Mayan language. This site, situated along the New River Lagoon, features monumental architecture of temples and palaces dating from the Classic and Pre-Classic Periods.

The ruin's core site includes more than 100 minor structures, including a ball court, at least 12 major buildings, and three temples. These temples are:
• The Mask Temple
• The Jaguar Temple
• The High Temple

Lamanai is buried deep in Belize's rainforest, so getting there and back is an adventure of its own! See more of the land of Belize on your way to the river, and then enjoy an enchanting jungle boat ride complete with native wildlife!

Discover Shops, Galleries, Bars, and Restaurants on Ambergris Caye

Spend the day exploring San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, known as La Isla Bonita, the largest island in Belize. For diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, San Pedro is home to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, two popular snorkel/dive sites. Break for lunch at one of our favorite restaurants- we recommend Jambel's Jerk Pit, Palapa Bar and Grill or Maruba Beach Klub at Secret Beach- and then spend your afternoon exploring shops and bars at your leisure.

Here at St. George's, we make it simple to explore Belize by offering guided excursions, meaning you always have an experienced guide with you during each and every adventure. To experience all of the adventures listed in this post, simply choose our Captain's Adventure Week package, and when you arrive to the island you can relax knowing everything has been taken care of for you!

Your Secluded Island Paradise - Belize

Kayak-on-the-great-blue-sea---St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Beliz_20200121-193815_1 Set out for views of a lifetime and catch some sun!

Each week guest come and go. Each of them having a different set of goals for their stay with us. Most are surprised at how much there is to do, right here on the island. We wanted to feature all of the complimentary activities there are right here at the caye. We hope you can read through this and enjoy the beautiful scenery while dreaming of setting sail or taking a dip in the sea.

Kayak: Take off right from our swimming beach and easily paddle the leeward side of the caye over to the mangroves and the ultra-calm canals that separate section of the island. Search out the great herons, frigate birds and white egrets – maybe even spot some nests. Or get adventurous and paddle out toward the reef, stopping for a dip in the warm water. (Single and tandem kayaks available.)

Sail the Caribbean: We maintain three Hobie Cat sailboats for your pleasure. Experienced sailors enjoy visiting the sandbar nearby, even taking lunch (and a few beers) for the journey. The larger boat will accommodate four people, so you can go with friends, or make new friends. It's easy to learn to sail these boats, so just ask if you would like to try it – our captains will be happy to "teach you the ropes" (no charge) and you will be sailing in no time!

Stand-Up Paddle Boards (SUP): Try this fun and popular new sport in the calm waters on the lagoon side of the island, a great way to check out the wildlife both above and below the water. We recently added stand-up paddle boards to our water sports equipment after guest requests - and what fun it has been! Paddle boards are a great workout too.

Snorkeling: Snorkeling right off the beach is fun and free, including complimentary use of our gear. There are always fish to find around the docks and you can stay close to shore. But for the ultimate snorkeling experience, you can schedule a half-day trip with our professional guides over the coral reef system just minutes from St. George's. You will find sea life on your own, and our guides will point out varieties of reef fish, rays, eels, conch, and possibly manatees. This is great fun with a group, or just for two! Snorkelers can also sign up to join a full-day guided trip to the Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef. This is a diver's mecca, but is also a tropical dream trip for snorkelers.

Windsurfer's Heaven: Located at the far western end of the Caribbean Sea, we are blessed most every day with excellent breezes (trade winds) blowing across the reef, providing ideal crosswind for exciting windsurfing. We have been told by guests who travel the world in search of "the best wind" that the shallow waters between St. George's Caye and our coral reef provide the ideal conditions for windsurfing – come experience it for yourself! Just like the sailing, if you want to try windsurfing, our captains will be happy to set you up and get you on your way. After a few trials and maybe a few refreshing dips in the ocean, you will be riding the waves!

Swimming in Paradise: Guests at St. George's Caye Resort enjoy three excellent swimming options. Our sparkling pool is maintained with the perfect water balance to be ready when you are – 24/7. The water is slightly saline which means it stays clean and requires much less chlorine than traditional pools. Swim laps, start a water polo match, or just cool off in the tropical sun. Our lagoon facing swimming beach allows you to walk right into the sea from your lounge chair. You can swim out into the protected bay of our crescent-shaped island, or paddle around the docks looking for sea life.

Dolphins frequent this side of the island an you may even meet a Manatee. Take our complimentary snorkel gear and you will be sure to view juvenile reef fish. Our sands are comprised of finely broken coral making for a solid surface of beautiful white. On our dock on the windward side of the caye you will find chairs, chaise lounges and hammocks under a thatch-roof palapa and out in the sun.

Of course, relaxation and soaking up the sun are always island approved "activities". We thoroughly encourage down time and it is so much of the redeeming qualities that this secluded island paradise offers. You just relax, we will bring you a drink!

St. George's Caye Resort is found 7-miles from main-land Belize City. Did you know the shallow waters of Belize contain the only classic tarpon flats outside of Florida? Saltwater Flat Fishing is popular among those who want to catch the "Big Three" of permit, tarpon, and bonefish. Experienced anglers prefer to use fly gear while flat fishing, while beginners will typically use spin gears. No matter your experience, this is an exciting fishing adventure for one and all- especially in the summer months that are also known as Grand Slam Season- where you have the best chance of catching the big three in one trip!

River

The Old Belize River is our location of choice when it comes to river fishing and is located about 30 minutes from the resort. You'll actually pass it as you travel from the airport to the island, so be on the lookout for a sneak peek on your way in! This river empties into the Caribbean Sea, which means the water here is unique as it is a mix of fresh and salt water, also known as "brackish water". In this type of water we target snooks, jacks, tarpon (catch and release) and snappers. If you're lucky, you may even land yourself a grouper or spot a manatee!

Reef

Take a short boat ride south of the resort with our experienced guides and experience fishing on the Belize Barrier Reef- the 2nd largest in the world and home to over 500 species of fish! Snappers, barracuda, mackerels, groupers, and jacks are among the many fish you may catch during your time on the reef. Check out this exciting fishing experience a recent guest shared with us!

"My wife and I went on a half day fishing trip, it was guided by a local fisherman and he put us on some Barracuda! We caught 9, it was my wife's first time salt water fishing. She caught the largest one (3.5 - 4 ft, 20 - 25 lbs). The staff cooked our fish for all the guests to enjoy as part of the evening meal, mouthwatering!! We will be returning to this resort as soon as we can!"

Fish

Tarpon

Our flats are renowned for the opportunity to site cast to tarpon 12 months of the year. Tarpon numbers begin to increase in April and May and drop off in September or October, with the peak months being June, July, and August. Some resident tarpon stay throughout the year. Moon phases tend to effect tarpon more than other fish so the guideline is to fish around the new moon. But remember, this is only a guideline and plenty of guets catch tarpon at other times too.

Belize Permit

Permit are found on what is called "the bonefish flats" and on many of the tarpon flats as well. They are found in large schools and range from four to thirty pounds, with the majority in the range of eight to ten pounds. Permit fishing tends to be more predictable when the prevailing winds are most consistent - generally in the winter, spring, and summer.

Bonefish

The bonefish in the waters of Belize run from two to five pounds and are plentiful year-round. Most fly fishing for bonefish is done from the bow of the boat, but there are flats that may be waded as well.

What is relaxation?

Relaxation is a state where you feel calm and can manage your stress or anxiety.

How can relaxation improve your mental health?

Relaxation reduces stress and the symptoms of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety and others. Relaxation also has other related health benefits, including:

What are some relaxation techniques?

Relaxation techniques focus on muscle relaxation or breathing. An example is progressive muscle relaxation, where you tense then relax different muscle groups.

 Other techniques include:

  • visualization, where you create a mental image of a calming place for you
  • deep breathing, where you refocus your attention on your breathing
  • hypnosis
  • meditation
  • mindfulness
  • exercise

Ways to include relaxation in your life:

Find a relaxation technique that works for you and make it part of your daily routine, even if it's just for 5 or 10 minutes a day.

If you're interested in mindfulness, you may want to use mindfulness coloring books to help you focus on the present moment and take your mind off other things. This includes an aspect of art therapy, another relaxation technique.

Fishing in Belize- Your UnBelizeable Fish Story!

fishing-caribbean-sea-belize

Belize has some of the best game fishing in the world. As part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef – the largest in the Western Hemisphere – the Belize Barrier Reef offers unmatched fishing opportunities. Some anglers tell us it is virtually impossible to go fishing in Belize and not catch something! No guarantees of course but those are pretty good odds.

An additional factor to consider when planning a successful trip, aside from the health of our local reefs and ecosystems, is to seek out local insider information about the best spots. Your guide will know the most populated areas and will work to take you to locations known to host the very fish that you seek, hopefully in huge abundance.

Read more about fishing with St. George's Caye Resort's Professional Valet Guides

Great weather, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of action are all part of the Belize fishing experience. Some of the favorite sport fish in Belize are snook, tarpon, jack, barracuda, bonefish, snapper, permit, plus many more!

The local Belize info resource site has up to date information on seasons, population updates and also suggestions on timing for the perfect trip. They write in their fishing info article, "May, June, July, August and early September are considered to be the best fishing months here primarily because there are good numbers of the "Big Three" of Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit available. Summer temperatures are in the low-to-mid-90s and a steady trade wind generally makes the weather very comfortable."

A fun addition to your experience is Lionfish dive hunting. This invasive species has no natural predators and therefore hunting them is necessary to manage their population. Despite their eccentric exterior, they also happen to be a delicious treat. When filleted correctly to eliminate their poison, they are described as "white, flaky, mild, tender, and delicious". When our guests catch their game fish, we are happy to prepare them. Many guests will indulge in their catch of the day with just their group, or better yet, share with the whole resort group.

Read more about Lion Fish.

At St. George's Caye Resort, we're fortunate to be located adjacent to the flats, close to the reef, and a short ride from the Belize River, so you can enjoy a variety of fishing during your caribbean vacation. Your fishing experience is sure to be memorable as we feature some of Belize's best and most experienced guides! Depending on your particular needs and schedule, packages are customized to fit you and/or your party.

The types of fishing trips we offer are:

  • River Fishing

  • Fly or Spin Fishing
  • Lion Fish Spear Hunting for divers

It's never too early to make arrangements in order to ensure that all your needs are met, and we would love to host you or your group for the ultimate fishing experience. Come away to a place where your fish will really be "This big!"

Whether you are a diver or just like to skim the surface to observe, you can see an array of aquatic life; from the vibrant Lionfish to playful pods of dolphins and even the illusive manatees, Belize and the waters around St. George's Caye Resort are full of rare viewing opportunities to last a lifetime!

3. Cave Tubing and Jungle Zip-lining- Float on inner tubes with only your headlamp to guide the way as the Caves Branch River winds a path through the Maya mountain and numerous caves. Then whiz past a stunning display of floral and faunas on an incredible zip line adventure!

The reef has an abundance of small bait fish and crustaceans that attract large game fish! Fishing is good year-round, but summer is an excellent time to catch the "Big Three" of tarpon, bonefish, and permit.

5. Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP), Kayak and Sail- Explore the Caribbean Sea by kayak, stand up paddle board, or sailboat. Discover an array of wildlife both above and below the water. You never know what you will see- puffer fish, dolphins, and great herons are just a few animals guests have spotted during their time in the ocean!

7 Reasons Destination Weddings are the Best

destination-wedding-beach-belize-islandjpg

You're engaged! Congratulations! After popping the question, there are so many exciting decisions to make in the wedding planning process! One of the very first (and important!) decisions to make is to choose whether your wedding will be held locally or at a destination of your choosing. Typically, a destination wedding involves holding your ceremony and reception more than 100 miles from where you live, usually a sunny beach location (Belize is a great option!).

According to a recent post on Tripsavvy.com, 25% of all weddings are destination weddings, and they seem to be growing in popularity. Your wedding will be one-of-a-kind, as you won't have to choose from the same hometown wedding venues, and it will be a celebration your guests will always remember!

So what's so great about destination weddings? We're so glad you asked! Read on for seven reasons why we think they are the best!

1. Does it get any better than extending the celebration over a few days? On average, guests will stay 3 or more days at the wedding location. Couples will have plenty of opportunity to celebrate with their guests over multiple days and can host pre and post wedding activities such as dinners together, lounging by the pool, spa treatments, and excursions such as fishing or zip lining!

2. The guest list for destination weddings tends to be smaller and more intimate, with an average guest count of 38. Your guests will be your closest family and friends, and you'll get quality time with each one of them- especially when everyone is staying at the same resort.

3. When you plan a destination wedding, you can leave the details to the on-site experts. Most resorts will have a planner assigned to arrange all of the needed paperwork, officiant, and other important details of your day. This makes planning a breeze!

4. Travel to a new place! Is an overwater bungalow on your bucket list? Have you always wanted to dip your toes in the ocean? Experience the culture of another country or an area of your own country? You can literally choose any destination your heart desires, and spend as much time as you'd like exploring before and after your celebration!

5. Stay for your honeymoon! A destination wedding basically doubles as a wedding and a vacation. Once your guests have gone home, it's easy to continue your honeymoon at the same location! Bonus- you could split your time and jet off to another location and experience two different honeymoon locations!

6. Your photos will be incredible! One of the reasons couples choose a destination wedding is for a gorgeous location. Whether that's a tropical beach or in the middle of the mountains, you're pretty much guaranteed an amazing backdrop for your wedding!

7. Save money with a destination wedding. According to The Knot, the national average cost of a wedding in 2018 was $33,931. All weddings are unique, so costs can vary greatly from person to person, but smaller, more intimate destination weddings tend to cost less than a traditional celebration.

Have you ever noticed that after some vacations... you need another vacation just to decompress? We heard recently from a perspective guest who was shocked at our difference or the uniqe quality of St. George's Caye Resort. She said, "I travel all the time and I have not really found a place where our goal could be to do nothing. That sounds so refreshing. What a difference."

It is rare in this day and age to find time to sit still. Expecially without a device and social media keeping you constantly engaged, with seldom a silent moment.

The University of Michigan Medical School recomends some actions to take to reduce stress and fully relax. Bring these techniques with you and we will create the perfect enviromnet to try them out!

Take slow, deep breaths. Or try other breathing exercises for relaxation. Stress Management: Breathing Exercises for Relaxation

Do yoga. You can get books and videos to do at home or take a yoga class. Stress Management: Practicing Yoga to Relax

Practice mindful meditation. The goal of mindful meditation is to focus your attention on things that are happening right now in the present moment. For example, listen to your body. Is your breathing fast, slow, deep, or shallow? Do you hear noises, such as traffic, or do you hear only silence? The idea is just to note what is happening without trying to change it. Stress Management: Doing Meditation

5 Reasons to Visit Belize this Spring

oceantfront-bungalow-belize-ocean

As cold air settles in over a large number of countries around the world, many people are dreaming up warm, tropical vacations. Spring is the perfect time to pack your bags for a long weekend and visit Belize where is it always summer! Read on for 5 reasons why a spring vacation to Belize is the perfect choice.

Easter

Easter is the single, longest public holiday in Belize lasting four days from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Schools are closed for a full week and families take time for peace and reflection. There is also no shortage of celebration, as there are many festivities scheduled in addition to religious ceremonies.

The weather is beautiful

We are blessed with an endless-summer here in Belize! The weather pattern does begin to shift in March with daytime temperatures in the high 70's and low 80's. By the later part of May, temps rise into the 90's during the day. Warm, sunny days and breezy nights make for the perfect time to visit! For more details about our weather patterns, especially here on the Caye, click here.

Belize Chocolate Festival

A three-day festival celebrating all things chocolate? Yes, please! Cacao farm tours, local food and wine featuring chocolate, and music are just a few of the highlights of the celebration. This significant cultural event will be held in Toledo May 18th-20th, 2020.

Lighter crowds

Travel to Belize tends to taper off a little during the spring months. Take time to visit San Pedro markets and restaurants in a less crowded atmosphere, and explore caves and historical landmarks in a more leisurely fashion during this time. As always, St. George's is your spot for ultimate relaxation and privacy all year long. ;)

Just because!

Do you really need a better reason to visit than "just because"? It's good to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle of life every now and then. Your "Unbelizable" Girls Getaway!

Girls-Getaway-to-St.-Georges-Caye-Resort-Belize-Relaxation Relax with a girls getaway to St. George's Caye - Belize

Every lady needs a girl's weekend. With how crazy life is, quality time with friends doesn't happen as often as we'd like. Time with friends is essential for the soul just like sunshine, rest, and laughter. This time is scientifically proven to be good for you so grab your gals and pencil it in!

Getting away with the girls is fun, but did you know it's also great for your health and well-being? It has been proven that strong friendships can extend life expectancy and lower chances of heart disease. In 2016, researchers found evidence that spending time with friends can increase the production of Oxycontin, the hormone our bodies make when we're happy!

Set a date: We know it can be difficult to work around everyone's schedules, which is why it's important to plan in advance (a year ahead of time is not out of the question!) and get a date set on the calendar. 4-5 nights with travel included seems to be the perfect amount of time for a getaway with the girls. It's not too short and not so long that it's hard for friends to commit to the trip.

Choose a destination: Choosing your destination is the most exciting piece of planning, as it should be! There are a few things to consider during this phase of planning. Do you want to completely relax and spend your days lounging and chatting with friends, or are you looking for a little adventure? What accommodations are important? Do you want to spend time in a popular tourist destination, or does a place off the beaten path sound better?

"While we all love our families, it has been proven that friendship can extend life expectancy, lower chances of heart disease, and even help us better tolerate pain. Really!" Read more... - Travel & Leisure

Visit us at St. George's Caye:

We offer the luxury of both relaxation and adventure, which allows you to personalize your stay with us. Spend time discovering the underwater life off the dock by grabbing some complimentary snorkel gear and exploring for an afternoon. Indulge and unwind with a massage or manicure from our amazing island spa team. Or schedule an island excursion to San Pedro! This excursion is the perfect mix- a little bit of snorkeling or diving, lunch, and an afternoon of shopping and exploring. Even "hammock time" is an approved activity here on the island, so do as much of that as you'd like!

Want us to do the planning? Book our Girls Getaway package and your activities will be set! The Girls Getaway package includes a manicure, pedicure, one-hour Swedish massage, as well as a guided snorkel trip over our amazing coral reef! It's the ultimate combination of relaxation and adventure.

If you're from the United States, Belize is an easy international destination to travel to, as there are many direct flights from the U.S., English is the official language, and U.S. currency is widely accepted. The Gift of Experience Comes in a Beautiful Package

The sky over St. George's Caye Resort - Adventure, Jungle excursions from a secluded island paradise. Heavenly skies over St. George's Caye

Take a second and think back to around this time last year. You were likely prepping for holiday time, anticipating parties and togetherness with family, food and friends.

The mood was hustle and bustle to shop and not let anything go un-perfected for the upcoming holidays. And so it goes again this year...

Year after year the prep for the Holidays is busy, sometimes stressful and before you know it all of that focus has led to time that has come and gone.

This is a great case for experiences as gifts. Once the dust of the Holiday settles, you are thrown back into work and routine. This year, instead of heading to the local big box store to buy gift cards for the closest restaurant chain, try buying a portion of, or an entire experience for your loved ones.

A Cornell University Study finds that, "The satisfaction we get from buying vacations, bikes for exercise and other experiences starts high and keeps growing. The initial high we feel from acquiring a flashy car or megascreen TV, on the other hand, trails off rather quickly…" "Your experiences are inherently less comparative, they're less subject to and less undermined by invidious social comparisons," said professor of psychology Thomas Gilovich, who published the study with Travis J. Carter, Ph.D. '10, in a recent issue of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

This experience can be as simple as a local vineyard tour, or as complex as international travel. They key is to give the recipient the chance to make memories of a lifetime and relish in your gift for years to come!

Why you need an Unplugged Belize Vacation in the New Year

Belize-island-vacation-by-the-pool Belize Island Time

What exactly is an unplugged vacation? Imagine time minus television, computers, iPads and phones, time focused on people - where you literally unplug yourself from sensory overload! We challenge you to get away from the daily grind, to reconnect, to refresh.

Most of us are addicted to electronics and don't even realize it. Ask yourself, when is the last time I went to bed without watching the news? Or checking email or Facebook - one last time? So why not take an intentional break from the hum of daily life?

Here are 4 Reasons you need to consider it:

- Your brain needs to detox. There is a gland in your brain called the pineal gland. Its responsible for regulating melatonin, which helps you to relax and get to sleep. Your computer screen overstimulates the pineal gland. When it’s overstimulated the melatonin in your body is suppressed and your sleep and rest periods will be automatically more difficult. Give your brain a break.

- Memories are not made staring into screens! Memories are made laughing over meals or chasing hermit crabs on the shore. Memories are made exploring ancient Mayan Ruins or hiking through jungles. Memories are made in private cabanas and staring into one another's eyes. You will return home with unforgettable memories.

- Unplugged vacations encourage movement. Our bodies and our minds are happier when we move. When there is no television to watch you're more likely to take a leisurely walk go for a swim in the salty sea. You are more likely to be more active.

- Because at the end of the day - people matter most. Reconnect with your partner. Or your best friend. Or yourself! Cultivating healthy relationships is difficult when we are constantly distracted my text messages and emails. When is the last time you sat quietly and focused on yourself or your partner to the exclusion of everything else for days at a time? It will change your perspective and allow for more meaningful relationships.

Snorkel in Belize at our Beach Resort

St. George's Caye Resort in Belize is perfectly designed to help you disconnect with the noise of your busy life. And reconnect with yourself. We make it possible for you to check your email - just not inside your private Cabana. No televisions are to be found and most people won't get a cell phone signal. But no need to worry! We are not totally off the grid. Just enough to allow you to relax and experience the magic.

12 private thatched roof cabanas nestled on a secluded tropical island. No roads. No stores. Just peaceful nature surrounds you. A place you can truly unwind, let loose, and relax. You will find yourself lost in the abundance of fish when your snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef. It will remind you how big and beautiful the world is and how your forgot you loved to travel.

We invite you to experience the magic of an unplugged private island getaway at St. George's Caye Resort - The Gem of Belize. Getting here is easy - Leaving is hard!

The Skies are Bigger in Belize

The Skies are Bigger in Belize The skies are endless in Belize

When it's time for a dose of perspective, just look at the night sky. They say the skies are bigger in Belize. Whether it's day or night, the skyline view from the island feels epic in proportion.

We are honored to witness this amazing thing that happens when guests come away; they seem to transform. Whether it's through the experience that they have, the sights they see, the food they taste, or the sea air that they smell, it allows them to disconnect from who they are every single day.

This totally natural shift in focus allows one to reassess who they want to be when they return home.

Of course, we host leisure travelers that are simply looking for a chance to relax and "un-think". But, just that pure experience creates change and a pause that is healthy.

We hope you take it from us, the experts in big skies, that there's nothing more beautifully adequate then you need it, than a shooting star.

St. George's Caye Resort is located 7 miles by boat transfer from the Belize City marina.

We look forward to seeing you in the sun!

Are you anticipating planning your next getaway? You literally have a world of options.

We are, of course partial to our little cultural and ecological gem but we love hearing of our guest's other worldly travels. For those of you who hear the word "Belize" and wonder, "Where is that country anyway?" We want to give you lots of fun details about our small but fulfilling destination!

Travelers often think of Belize for a quick trip because many US international airports offer direct flights. Houston, Atlanta, Miami and seasonally even chilly Minneapolis offer direct non-stop flights. Belize is also on the Central time zone so when traveling from the US, we are just a couple hours difference from most US states.

Getting to St. George's Caye & Weather Q&A

sgcr_overheadview

This series of articles is meant to make you the expert on everything Belize. We will have three short blogs to give you the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. Feel free to message us with more questions at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have more beautiful details you would like to know.

When booking an international flight, which airport do we choose?

Choose BZE (Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, Belize City). You benefit by the unique location of St. George's Caye – 1) the shortest travel time to any island resort; 2) we greet you when you arrive and bring you to our marina and to the resort; 3) you pay nothing for your transfer (with minimum stay); and 4) easiest access back to the mainland for jungle adventures.

 Which airlines serve Belize?

American Airlines Dallas TX and Miami FL
Delta Airlines Atlanta GA and Los Angeles CA
Taca Airlines from U.S. via El Salvador
United Airlines Houston TX
US Airways Charlotte NC
Tropic Air offers a connector flight from Cancun to Belize City

Do I need a visa to travel to Belize?
U.S. and Canadian citizens can visit Belize with their passport; no visa required.

What is the charge for the airport transfers?
Airport transfers are included with any stay 4 nights or longer.

If I'm staying somewhere else in Belize before or after St. George's Caye, how do we handle transfers?

Just let us know your travel plans—our staff will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Belize City. If you are flying to or from another destination within Belize, be sure you use the MUNICIPAL airport—this will save you money and time.

When I look at the weather report for Belize, it shows rain. Is it really going to rain on my vacation? When is the best time to visit?
First, don't believe the weather forecasts because they are for the mainland, not for our island. Second, understand that "rainy season" does not mean it rains most days – quite the opposite. See details on our Location & Weather page.

St. George's Caye Resort is located 7 miles by boat transfer from the Belize City marina.

We look forward to seeing you in the sun!
