The Island Life - Belize
Preserved in Time - A Natural Oasis of History
St. George's Caye isn't just a private island resort; it's Belize's first capital and the site of the 1798 battle that shaped the nation. Discover the island's layered history and how it became the boutique escape it is today.
Not Just Another Pin on the Map
When you step off the boat at St. George's Caye Resort, time slows down. But this small island has always been a stage for big stories. In the 1700s, St. George's Caye was the largest settlement in what became British Honduras, and effectively the first capital of Belize. Traders, sailors, and settlers chose it for its strategic spot along the reef. Convenient for resources and shipping channels.
The Battle That Shaped a Nation
The most famous chapter came in September 1798, when the Baymen (local woodcutters, settlers, etc.) defended the Caye against a Spanish fleet. For a week, the Spanish ships probed the waters; on September 10, the Baymen stood firm. Their victory secured Belize as an English settlement and paved the way for the nation's independence centuries later.
Today, Belizeans still mark September 10th as a public holiday and the Battle of St. George's Caye is remembered as a turning point in Belize's history.
From Family Home to Boutique Resort
The island's story didn't stop in the 18th century. In 1881, a Scottish merchant named Sydney Cuthbert bought the very plot of land where St. George's Caye Resort now stands. He built a stilted, two-story home for his family and is living much similarly to the way our guests do today: lulled by the sea breeze, surrounded by reef and sky.
That family thread carries forward into the modern resort. While our overwater cabanas and beachfront villas are more comfortable than 19th-century stilt homes, the spirit is the same: a place to pause, connect, and savor life on the water's edge.
